Ingredients

6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 2-quart baking dish.

2. In a large bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, 2 tablespoons flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish.

3. In another bowl, combine brown sugar, rolled oats, 1/2 cup flour, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.

4. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples.

5. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

6. Let cool slightly before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for a more flavorful filling.

For extra crunch, add 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping.

Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated for up to 4 days; reheat in the oven for best texture.
