Description

Few comfort foods can rival a bowl of creamy garlic mashed potatoes. Imagine fluffy, smooth potatoes swirled with roasted garlic, rich butter, and a touch of cream—every spoonful delivers warmth, nostalgia, and absolute satisfaction. Whether you’re planning a festive holiday spread or craving a hearty side for weeknight dinners, these mashed potatoes are the kind that get scraped clean first. This easy recipe is perfect for anyone searching for quick breakfast, easy dinner, healthy snack, breakfast ideas, dinner ideas, easy recipe, or comforting food ideas.

Ingredients

2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes

4 to 5 cloves garlic, peeled

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup whole milk

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon chopped chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Peel and cut potatoes into even chunks. Place in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook until fork-tender (about 15–20 minutes).

2. While potatoes cook, combine heavy cream, milk, unsalted butter, and garlic cloves in a small saucepan. Heat over low until the butter melts and garlic is fragrant and softened (about 10 minutes). Remove garlic cloves or mash them into the mixture for a stronger flavor.

3. Drain potatoes well and return to the pot. Let them sit for 2–3 minutes to evaporate excess moisture.

4. Mash potatoes until smooth using a potato masher or ricer.

5. Pour the hot garlic-cream mixture over the potatoes. Add salt and black pepper. Gently whip with a hand mixer or mash with a wooden spoon until creamy—do not overmix.

6. Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with extra butter and sprinkle with chopped chives or parsley, if using. Serve warm.

Notes

Always start potatoes in cold water to ensure even cooking.

Letting the potatoes dry for a couple of minutes after draining gives a fluffier texture.

For make-ahead, prepare up to 2 days in advance and reheat gently with extra milk or cream to restore creaminess.
